The Grand Budapest Hotel – Most beautiful and Symmetrical movie
Mr. Gustave starts telling this story, it’s a very simple story and I don’t want to explain it here. Yes, the story is good but the scenes, OMG they are amazing. The movie is so pleasing to the eyes and the flow of the scenes is incredible. The Grand Budapest Hotel was one of the best works of Wes Anderson. There's this particular scene where Mr. Gustave and his prison friend try to escape the facility and we will talk about that.
I have talked about the symmetry and use of symmetry in movies in a previous article Composition of Cinematography so feel free to get an idea about that from my article it has all the composition (mechanics) elements of a movie.
I want to talk about one particular scene in the movie which is the Prison escape and will talk only that because you can talk about every scene in this movie frame by frame its such a masterpiece.
Wes Anderson beautifully presented The Prison's escape to the audience by the director. It had a great flow and the Escape plan was fabricated to look smooth as possible neglecting the reality of the situation. If you pay attention to the story they are some scenes where the writer is getting away from reality and use his creativity to make the scene as pleasingly as possible to the audience.
I'll take you through the scene. So the police are arresting Mr. Gustava for the murdering of Madam D his beloved lover, it was a false conviction but the evidence has been placed not in his favor (He got so many threats because her heir was so valuable and the owner is Mr. Gustava).

So Mr. Gustava facing challenges in the prison mainly he has never used to that life of a criminal or thief Mr. Gustava is a manager in a hotel who lives a mannered and higher class life. So it took some for him to completely adapt to life in prison. There he managed to make some friends inside and planned his escape. Then Zero and Agatha managed to squeeze some tools to the Gustava and his friends so that they can start digging their cell, first step to the escape from prison.
They have used 1.37:1 aspect ratio and it works so well with the movie and especially in this case the director was highlighting the symmetrical shots and this almost square ration helps to highlight the symmetrical qualities of these shots.
I really like the flow of the scene, when the prisoners are bunny hopping through the guard's beds and finally cutting and trimming the steel window in the sidewall and how they went down and jumped to the laundry bin, all these scenes are beautifully crafted and presented to the audience. In some scenes, the director clearly took the story into unrealistic side with the purpose of making a masterpiece.
