INCEPTION 2010 - The Dream is Real (Movie Explained)
Cobb
(Leonardo DiCaprio) star of the movie. He is a professional Extractor trying to steal other's sensitive information for various client requests by tricking them to fall into a shared dream with him and manipulating until the subject is vulnerable enough to extract sensitive information requested by his clients.
Cobb is introduced as No. 01 extractor to in the business and can steal any sensitive information from anyone's mind. during one mission he failed to do so and accidentally met Saito (Ken Watanabe) offered Cobb with a deal to 'plant an idea on someone's head' and in return, he can go back to his family in the US
Implanting the idea in someone’s mind is harder than stealing secrets, it is known to be almost impossible because the subject has to think that it's their own idea, not something that's been planted by someone else. But anyway Cobb accepted this job it was his only shot of having his
normal life back.
Then the main mission, the mission is to plant an idea in Fisher’s (Cillian Murphy) head
to sell his father’s company which will soon be his company after the
death of his father. Ariadne (Ellen Page) joined as a new member of Cobb's team. She is a university student studying design and helps Cobb to design and build the
dream, where they plan on manipulating Fisher's thoughts.
As always Christopher Nolan's greats Cinematography mind made this movie one of the best science fiction in the 2010 era. The
script writing was done by Christopher himself and the way he conveyed this story to the audience is amazing and how he held up the viewer’s interests to the last minute of
the movie, where he left viewers blanked and the edge of the seats, when he ended the movie with the cut
of the spinning top (totem) scene where he doesn’t show what happens to the spinning top is ambiguous.
Totem: this can be any small objects and it used to check whether you're still dreaming or wake up from a dream. ones
who own this will check whether it behaves normally or abnormally if it keeps
behaving abnormally then you’re in a dream otherwise, you’re not dreaming. So
Cobb had a spinning top as a totem (Orignal owner is his wife - Mal) and every time he gets out of a dream he checks
it by spinning this totem and checking whether it’s going to fall or not if it
falls then he’s not dreaming because in real-world totem doesn’t keep spinning
forever it falls, so if he’s in some other's dream dreaming it doesn’t fall and it keeps spinning. (Because only he knows that totem spinning top is weighted in one side)
Who is the Extractor? And how does he
extract a secret from someone’s mind in a dream?
Cobb and the team is depending on a chemical injection to sedate and send the subject to a shared dream state
and making that state long, complexed and detailed enough so that subject would feel the dream as real and once they come to a certain level of trust they will feel safe
enough to let their secret’s out. It’s very easy for Cobb to extract secret’s
since Cobb only has to let his target subject to feel the dream is real.
How Cobb and the team implant the idea?
They take him a few levels deep (using dream within
dream concept) enough so that the target subject would feel that whatever happened on the above dream is his subconsciousness and his own genuine ideas.
What is this "LIMBO" state? In
real-life dreams when we die, fall or got a splash of water and we get to wake up, Ina shared dream they take a sedative
drugs to fall sleep and needs some kind of 'kick' (Splash of water, freefall, die, etc.) to get out of the dream state, and if someone goes too deep into dreams and goes few levels down as shown in above picture if they die that kick is not powerful enough to wake them up, so what happens is they fo to a much deeper dream state that will almost be impossible to wake up.
What happens to Cobb’s wife?
He tells his
story to Ariadne after she found out that Cobb is regularly visiting his wife in
his dreams. Cobb and Mal had a wonderful family with two kids and what happened
was after they were sharing a dream Mal thought she was still inside a dream
and she was so convinced that she went to suicide herself to wake up really,
but she died it’s weird why she didn’t use her Totem (spinning top – which Cobb
uses now)
In a few years
this will be named as one of the best classic science fiction, and the talks
about the concept of Lucid dreaming
What happens in the last scene?
When Cobb completed the mission and went to see his Children in the US he finally got to the house and for the final time he spun the totem and at the same time Hanz Zimmer scores keep ascending in the background and the Cobb spins his totem and it keeps spinning for a few seconds and starts to wobble and suddenly Christopher cut the scene and end the movie in the best ambiguous way possible.
I rate this movie 10 /10
and recommend all of you to watch the movie one of the best Science fiction in the 2000 era
As always THANK YOU!
