Ex Machina 2014 summary and explanation
If any of you have not seen the movie yet, please don’t go through this article because it contains lots of spoilers and this is a movie that you don’t want to see the ending on a website.
I highly recommend you watch the movie. The story is simple and understandable and the ending is unexpected. Watch the movie and be amazed by what AI can do.
Ex Machina featuring Oscar Issac, Alicia Vikander, Domhnall Gleeson written and directed by Alex Garland well known for his works like Annihilation, 28 days later and much more.
The plot is simple: A young self-made billionaire who is the founder and CEO of Blue Book Search engine (like Google), invited one of his employees to stay in his research facility in a remote area in the mountains as a prize of a competition held on Blue Book company. The movie is about how they interact with each other and Nathan sowing Caleb the next-generation AI he built inside the facility.
In the movie theses, two don't meet each other regularly but there was a moment when Caleb saw these two arguings and Nathan himself ripping the portrait of Caleb drew by Ava later in the movie it turned out it was just a manipulation trick used by Ava to win the trust of Caleb.
I highly recommend you watch the movie. The story is simple and understandable and the ending is unexpected. Watch the movie and be amazed by what AI can do.

The movie consists of only 4 characters Caleb, Nathan, Ava, and Kyoko. Even though the story seems simple what makes this movie complex enough that we had to explain is the complexity of the relationship withing characters.

We will talk about these relationships one by one.
Eventually, Ava starts flirting with Caleb and he thought the AI was pre-programmed to do that but finally it turns out it was seduction and it leads to complex the relationship between Caleb and Ava.
Nathan introduced Kyoko as the assistant of the research facility and she was happened to be a previous generation of AI that Nathan keeps for his works. Nathan programmed her such that she cannot speak any language and only understands the sign language. Nathan used Kyoko mainly to housekeeping, cooking and for his sexual desires. Her character doesn't affect the story much but shes being in the background add another complexity to the story.
01 Nathan and Caleb
Caleb is an employee of the Blue Book company run by Nathan. Caleb had initial respect for Nathan because of his success in the IT industry But as the story goes by Caleb found out some Nasty side of Nathan’s with the help of Ava and she uses Caleb in the latter part of the movie. Caleb tried to question Nathan every time he though some sneaky things are happening inside the research facility. After a while, Caleb no longer believed what Nathan says and he acted against Nathan full fill the dreams of Ava. |

02 Caleb and Ava(AI)
Caleb saw Ava on the 2nd day in a room full of CCTVs and separated Caleb and Ava by a Glass cabin. Nathan arranged these sessions where they talk with each other so that Caleb can find out the flaws of the AI. While these things happen Nathan overlooks this conversation from his office to analyze the behavior of the AI in front of this new personality.Eventually, Ava starts flirting with Caleb and he thought the AI was pre-programmed to do that but finally it turns out it was seduction and it leads to complex the relationship between Caleb and Ava.

The story is simple but the complexity of characters keeps us interested in the movie, so we have divided the story for 03 main parts, let's take a look at them.
01
Caleb arrives at the research facility and meeting Nathan his idol and the employer. Then these two spend some time getting to know each other and what’s happening inside the research facility and founding out about the AI Nathan being building inside the facility. Eventually, Caleb agreed to test the AI and many mysteries to unfold.

Then Caleb started questioning Ava to check her AI and to check whether the AI can pass a Turing test. after a couple of days with the seduction of Ava, Caleb got attracted to her and he starts believing her. During these sessions where Caleb was forced to believe that Nathan is not the person, he thinks rather there's a dark side for him.

Caleb planned the escape of Ava but realized Nathan has been eavesdropping to their private conversations that happened on power cuts. But Ava finally managed to escape the research facility with the help of Caleb and Kyoko but adding a twist to the story she left Caleb locked up inside the research facility.
Did AI outsmart the humans in Ex Machina?
Ava always wanted to see the world so her AI has been planning some way to go outside for days and Caleb comes to the equation and Ava took the advantage and used Caleb wisely. So yeah she did outsmart the humans to escape the facility and she never thought about Caleb after she escaped meaning that she only cares about herself which is the AI.
That's the easiest movie to explain but the more and more you look into this movie the complexity of the characters and their morality makes the story much interesting till the end.

CGI in this movie did an outstanding work of developing these robotic characters and here's a video by Corridor Crew where they talk about the CGI elements in the Ex Machina.
That's the easiest movie to explain but the more and more you look into this movie the complexity of the characters and their morality makes the story much interesting till the end.
