12 Years a Slave (Black Lives Matter)
Loved the story and the ending was happy but scrubbing back through the story the ending doesn't hold it's happiness throughout the story.
Let's talk about 12 Years a Slave, I just watched the movie, and right away I wanted to express my thoughts on this one and let's see if there are anything that we can get out of this story.
let's get. Now I'm rewatching it to write my review and to find the techniques used by the director to make this the Best Picture in 2014 OSCARS.
The story is about black Americans in the 17th and 18th centuries as they have been transferred to America for slavery. Director Steve McQueen never goes easy on visuals, there's some vigorous hard-hitting throughout the movie to emphasize the horrible things happening to the black people. 100 lashes, 150 lashes those are the words used in the movie.
For people who haven't watched the movie, I'm going to run down the plot to simply as possible.
SPOILER ALERT!!!
The story starts with a Black American family (wealthy respected family located in the Upstate NewYork, Mr. Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and his wife and children living in the town, then Mr. Northup's wife decided to leave the town with her children for her new job. In the meantime, Mr. Northup met these two guys whos going across the country doing entertainment shows and he got a request from them to joins with them. During these traveling, Mr. Northup got kidnapped in the South and sold for slavery and the rest of the story was the struggle he had as a slave and his interaction with different masters he was forced to work for.
EDITING
There's this scene in this movie where Mr. Northup is hanged just inches above the ground where he can barely stand on his toes. and the editor Joe Walker doesn't cut the clip and he kept it rolling for several minutes and the result he got is amazing and lots of movie reviewers named this scene as one of the greatest scenes in the history of Hollywood.
Breaking down the scene
In that cut, we can see that other slavers in the background do their day to day routing ignoring the fact that there is a man hanging from a tree not because they didn't care about Mr. Northup, they couldn't do anything if they are to help him they would also get in trouble. Then Mr. Ford (Benedict Cumberbatch) saw this cruelty that has been done to the Northup and freed him from it.
ACTING
Patsey(Lupita Nyong'o) won the ocscar for the best supproting actress in a movie. she does a wonderfull service to the character 'Patsey'. Her character shows what the slave girls had to bear in these slavery times and how to overcome challenges that no child should be faced with.
At one time she tries to win her master's heart thinking that can free her from this slavery but ended up getting into more troubles. Her role in this movie helps to balance the scenes and it helps to show that some girls had to face more cruelty than men.
Thank You! for reading my short review on 12 Years a Slave.
